DIRECTOR JAMES WAN’S “AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM” IS “WORLDBUILDING AND VISUAL STORYTELLING AT ITS ZENITH,” SAYS PRODUCER

“Aquaman” director James Wan promises that for the superhero movie’s sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” “Atlantis is even bigger, brighter, more colorful, more vibrant.”

But as exciting as it is to go back to Atlantis, movie audiences can look forward to seeing entirely new places, including the Lost Kingdom. In the first film, it was revealed that there were seven Kingdoms of Atlantis: Atlantis, Xebel, Kingdom of the Fishermen, Kingdom of the Trench, Kingdom of the Brine, Kingdom of the Deserters… and the Lost Kingdom: Necrus.

To create Necrus, Wan was inspired by Antarctica. “Antarctica felt like an inspiring landscape that is familiar,” says Wan, “but it’s also a place most of us have not visited, and that would allow me to explore a heightened version of it. I was excited to create this kingdom, which is a completely new visual element in this film, along with other new worlds. And I have to say, it wouldn’t be one of my films without some of my signature creations, so there are new, dark creatures for audiences to enjoy.”

To bring Antarctica to life during an English summer at Leavesden Studios in the United Kingdom, the movie’s art department created a frozen tundra across two soundstages and on the studio backlot. A field of ice was constructed, which plays host to Manta’s basecamp tents and vehicles, with giant fans blowing “snow” across the set and billowing the walls of the tent. Crew in shorts wore sunglasses to protect their eyes from the glare of the white exterior set as the cast sweated in high-tech cold weather costumes. The VFX team were dispatched to Antarctica, Greenland and Iceland to capture stunning aerial drone footage and real-world location plates to complete the final look of the frozen environment.

Producer Peter Safran says that audiences will be thrilled to experience the sequel. “James Wan has an incredible ability to capture the colors and the fantasy that exist in these never-before-seen worlds,” says Safran. “We wanted to take the audience on a travelogue of these astounding new environments above and below the surface… By embracing the mythic nature of Aquaman’s quest and combining it with these stunning visuals, James gives us something uniquely compelling—it is worldbuilding and visual storytelling at its zenith.”

Out-of-this-world worlds aside, it all comes back to the human aspect of the characters and the journey they go through. “While our last movie was a love story that focused on Arthur (Jason Momoa), this is an action adventure with two brothers, Arthur and Orm (Patrick Wilson), overcoming their differences to save the world,” says Wan. “They’re going up against an even more powerful Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), whose love for his father and his need for vengeance have taken a darker turn. We wanted to not only expand the story and the characters, but also give audiences an even more immersive and exciting experience.”

And at the center of it all is, of course, Arthur/Aquaman, “along with all of the signature charm and humor Jason infuses into this hero,” says the director. “And even though Aquaman sits on the throne, responsible for all of Atlantis, he is still a man, working to align his two roles—father and king—into this bold and expansive new world.”

“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” which also stars Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundren and Randall Park—all returning to the roles they originated, opens exclusively in cinemas December 20.

"I FOUND HIM TO BE A MUCH MORE COMPLEX PERSON THAN I IMAGINED,” JOAQUIN PHOENIX SAYS OF HIS TITULAR CHARACTER IN “NAPOLEON”

When Scott Ridley saw Joaquin Phoenix’s Academy Award®-winning performance in Joker, the director was reminded of their collaboration on Gladiator, and he knew that Phoenix would be perfect for the titular role in his new film Napoleon: “I saw him and it all came flooding back – how we worked on Gladiator, and what journey he went on with that character, and I thought, ‘God damn, there’s Napoleon.’”

Phoenix admits that he did not know much about the iconic French emperor before joining the project, and was surprised at some facets of the character that he discovered. “I found him to be a much more complex person than I initially imagined, especially the dynamic between him and Josephine,” says the actor who plays Napoleon. “I found him mysterious, and that mystery is something that is always interesting to explore.”

Watch director Scott and actress Vanessa Kirby talk about the “Unique Genius of Joaquin Phoenix” in this vignette:  https://youtu.be/t-GzKyT3xO8

Phoenix’s understanding of Scott’s processes made it easier for him to become the character, says producer Mark Huffam. “Ridley and Joaquin like to challenge each other on a regular basis, but it’s always done with a smile,” says Huffam. “Joaquin had his concerns about taking on the role, and I think anybody would about this character. But thanks to conversations with Ridley, he got comfortable with it quite quickly and he is fantastic.”

For Scott, reuniting with Phoenix for the first time since Gladiator was an immense pleasure. “He’s the only actor where we talk for weeks beforehand, just chatting and arguing in an office over aspects of the character. At the end, we are on the same page,” says the director. “He’s good for me, because he keeps me honest, and I’m good for him, because I keep him in line. Physically, he’s perfect for the role – some of his facial features are strikingly similar to Napoleon’s.”

Phoenix says that because Scott’s preparation is so meticulous, it allows his actors freedom to explore the role on set. “What I like is not having it all figured out in my head beforehand – I like to have several possibilities to play with on the day,” explains Phoenix. “Ridley not only allows that process, he encourages it – he wants you to move as freely as the character would.”

In the Scott Ridley-directed Napoleon, Academy Award®-winning Phoenix plays the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, opposite Vanessa Kirby, who plays the emperor’s one true love, Josephine. Napoleon opens exclusively in cinemas November 29.

SEXIESTMANALIVE PATRICK DEMPSEY PLAYS THE SHERIFF IN A MURDER-PLAGUED TOWN IN ELI ROTH’S “THANKSGIVING”

For his holiday horror movie Thanksgiving, director Eli Roth brought the cast together very quickly – and first to join the film was Patrick Dempsey – McDreamy himself and People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2023. In the slasher movie, Dempsey plays Sheriff Newlon, who has the unenviable job of investigating the gruesome deaths that pile up like food on a Thanksgiving plate in his town.

Dempsey had two main reasons for wanting to join the cast: “My son wanted me to do a horror film,” he explains, “and I wanted to wear a uniform.”

In the movie, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts – the birthplace of the infamous holiday. Picking off residents one by one, what begins as random revenge killings are soon revealed to be part of a larger, sinister holiday plan. Dempsey is joined by younger cast members who play local high schoolers, including Nell Verlaque, Milo Manheim, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Tomaso Sanelli, Gabriel Davenport, Jenna Warren and TikTok star Addison Rae.

Dempsey notes that after coming of age as a heartthrob in teen movies like Can’t Buy Me Love and Loverboy, he’s now “on the other side,” as he puts it. With that experience, he knows what makes a teen cast tick. “It was fun to watch them blossom and come together as a company and as friends,” he says. “That chemistry makes the film fun and enjoyable and gives it authenticity.”

Dempsey’s castmates have only nice things to say about him too. “He’s a class act,” shares Verlaque, who plays Jessica. “I wish I could talk badly about him but I can’t.”

“Patrick really heightens this movie,” says Manheim, who plays Jessica’s boyfriend Ryan, and who stars in another upcoming holiday film, Journey to Bethlehem. “There’s nobody else that I’d rather have be our fearless leader.”

A starstruck Warren, who plays Yulia, shares a fun behind-the-scenes story about her heartthrob costar. “On our first day, Patrick Dempsey scared me in a clown costume twice,” she recalls. “I screamed and dropped to the ground. It was the weirdest phone call I’ve ever made to my mom. ‘You can’t repeat this to anyone, and I shouldn’t even be telling you this right now but Patrick Dempsey just scared me in a clown suit twice in front of everyone on my first day. So I’m really excited to be here.’”

It’s been quite an experience for Dempsey too. “I haven’t done a horror film in a really long time, so for me it’s been really fun,” he says.

This November, a new horror legend will emerge. Thanksgiving, starring Patrick Dempsey, opens in cinemas November 22.
