Science Bros: Peter Parker seeks Bruce Banner’s help in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” out in PH cinemas on July 29

 COLUMBIA PICTURES

It’s a brand new day for Peter Parker.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Peter Parker is fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him. That and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him spark a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.

Tom Holland, who plays the dual role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, calls the film “a fresh start, where Peter Parker is experiencing something profound and unique in the super hero genre. It’s a movie about when young people find their identity and become adults. Peter is embarking upon a new chapter.”

Director Destin Daniel Cretton says that Peter goes through many changes in the film. “A huge part of the story is watching Peter undergo an emotional and physical transformation,” says the filmmaker. “The two are linked.”

Watch the trailer: https://youtu.be/bbVLLv1s1Gw

While Peter has his own ways of trying to deal with the emotional, he needs help to try to understand the changes he’s going through physically. As Peter begins a startling physical transformation, he seeks answers from a former fellow Avenger who’s now a distinguished scientist and professor – Dr. Bruce Banner, who of course doesn’t recognize Peter.

Peter seeking out Dr. Banner for answers sets the stage for an epic confrontation between Spider-Man and Banner’s monstrous alter-ego, Savage Hulk. Gone is the Smart Hulk character, which brought intelligence and depth to the Hulk in Avengers: Endgame; Banner now is back to basics as the towering figure fans know so well from the comics and the earlier films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Says Cretton, “To many, the most iconic pairing in the comics is Spider-Man and The Hulk. When we brought back Mark Ruffalo, we gave careful consideration as to what iterations of the character we would see and how to put these two icons together, and what – or who – would cause Bruce to become savage again.”

Ruffalo, who made a brief but memorable appearance in Cretton’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was eager to work again with the director. Additionally, he relates, “I think the fans will love the idea of Hulk and Spider-Man finally meeting up in the cinematic universe. Their pairings in the comics are iconic and legendary.”

In Brand New Day, “Banner and Peter really hit it off as science bros,” Ruffalo shares. “But things happen…”

Producer Kevin Feige says the long anticipated cinematic pairing of Spidey and Hulk “was something that really excited all of us, especially that he’s again played by the great Mark Ruffalo, who’s brought out so many unforgettable facets of the character.”

Also starring Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman and Michael Mando, Spider-Man: Brand New Day dawns in Philippine cinemas on July 29. Tickets available now!

My Honest Review of SUPERGIRL: Mostly Enjoyable. Milly Alcock soars high as Kara Zor-El !

By: Edgar Allan E. Yu

SUPERGIRL, based on the comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, offers a fresh and compelling take that sets it apart from any previous film or TV adaptations. This is definitely not just a female version of Superman. Instead, Kara Zor-El is portrayed as a messy party girl—often drunk and far from the typical role-model archetype. Yet, beneath that chaotic exterior lies a tough, super-strong heroine carrying a heavy emotional burden.

Milly Alcock shines brilliantly as Supergirl, bringing a likeable, brave, and unpredictable energy to the character that truly soars. Her portrayal captures the complexity of Kara Zor-El in a way that feels authentic and engaging. David Corenswet’s Kal-El adds depth to the story, embodying the noble traits of Superman with genuine warmth, and their interactions create some of the film’s most memorable moments. Eve Ridley delivers a powerful performance as Ruthye, a character driven by trauma and revenge, while Jason Momoa embraces the role of Lobo with infectious enthusiasm, clearly enjoying every moment. And let’s not forget Krypto—the cutest companion who deserves even more screen time. The fight scenes are well-executed and thrilling, and the flashbacks to Krypton add a visually delightful layer to the narrative.

However, the film isn’t without its flaws. The main villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Mathias Schoenaerts, feels disappointingly generic and lacks the impact one would expect from a comic-book antagonist. Additionally, director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Ana Nogueira’s departure from the source material results in a story that misses some of the profound emotional depth found in the original comic.

Despite these shortcomings, SUPERGIRL remains a mostly enjoyable experience. It successfully introduces a complex, flawed, and compelling new version of Kara Zor-El, anchored by Milly Alcock’s standout performance. Fans and newcomers alike can look forward to seeing this Supergirl rise to even greater heights in future installments.

How “Evil Dead Burn” sets the franchise ablaze with a bold new story and impactful horror Rated R-18 with no cuts

 COLUMBIA PICTURES

Hell has arrived on earth as the Deadites return in Evil Dead Burn, the latest in an enduring horror franchise that has terrified generations. In Evil Dead Burn, a recently widowed woman stays to grieve with her in-laws in their secluded family home. The tragic family reunion soon turns into a nightmare as one by one they turn into Deadites, discovering that her wedding vows may come to haunt her from the afterlife.

Watch the official trailer: https://youtu.be/Q_sJqu-bYiA

French director Sébastien Vaniček gained international recognition for his skin-crawling film Vermines (known as Infested internationally). For Evil Dead Burn, he collaborates with his co-writer Florent Bernard to helm the iconic horror franchises. He describes his experience in shooting the film as nothing short of exhilarating. “It starts with an idea in your apartment in Paris,” he laughs, “and then cut to a crew of 200 in front of three people on fire, in front of a house on fire. It’s pretty crazy, but I’m surrounded by people who are really professional and very good at what they do, so I’m in good hands.”

Vaniček always had the fans at the forefront of his planning, and so he wanted to deliver something fresh but still undeniably Evil Dead in its DNA. “There's obviously an immense respect for the franchise and the fans. That's where it all begins. But I know I wasn't offered this role to simply do what the audience expects. Respect is also understanding that Evil Dead is not just about blood and chainsaws. There is so much more to explore in this world. And that's what I was determined to do. Understand the rules and twist them. Try to bring a new vision, a unique vision to this amazing world. I think that’s why Evil Dead is still alive today - because it gives directors freedom to do new things.”

For writer Bernard, he wanted to also refresh the context in which the horror unfolds, which led them to the more intimate setting of a wife grieving the loss of her husband. “The biggest challenge was avoiding too much repetition of what had already been done. That’s why we decided not to use a group of friends or people of the same age. But a woman uprooted and stuck with her in-laws—especially after a loss that affects them all—carried real narrative promise. Sébastien didn’t want to make the bloodiest Evil Dead, but definitely the most violent one.”

The duo’s execution of Evil Dead Burn presents what makes the series so compelling, bold, and enduring, and they hope the audience would get as much of a thrill in watching the film as they had creating it. “If audiences walk out of the theatre feeling like they’ve experienced a horror-action film that’s emotional and funny, as well as uncomfortable and exhilarating,” says Bernard, “that’s what we’re aiming for.”

“Evil Dead Burn” gets unleashed in Philippine cinemas on July 8, rated R-18 with no cuts.

‘You’re so happy and proud of yourself, but then it also takes a while to sink in,’ Eve Ridley talks about getting the role of Ruthye in “SUPERGIRL,” in cinemas JUNE 24

 WARNER BROS. PICTURES

Eve Ridley wasn’t sure if she was going to hear back after her “Supergirl” audition for the role of Ruthye. She went through a series of auditions and there was a lot of time in between.

“But then I did get the call with the news and it’s the best feeling ever,” shares the young Filipino-British actress. “It’s a feeling that you can’t describe, you know? You’re so happy and proud of yourself, but then it also takes a while to sink in. That’s when I read the comic and I did lots of research about Supergirl and her iconic look and the difference between Kara and Supergirl. And I loved it and I’m so happy that I got to be part of this amazing film.”

In “Supergirl,” Ridley plays the headstrong, focused and scrappy Ruthye Marie Knoll of the Danastia Clan, who is unwavering in her drive to avenge her family and serve justice to the man who killed them. She and Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl (played by Milly Alcock), join forces on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.

Kara and Ruthye are unlikely allies, but they work. Says Ridley, “Ruthye’s quite upright and very composed and put together, but then Kara… she’s got that sort of energy where she doesn’t care what she says and she’s using a lot of slang language and it’s all really casual. You can see the difference between them and how it clashes. I think that’s really funny.”

Screenwriter Ana Nogueira says that Ridley and Alcock immediately hit it off. “Milly was like a big sister to Eve throughout this challenging thing that they both were doing, and I think all of that sisterly love and respect comes through on screen,” says Nogueira and adds, “Eve Ridley is just an unbelievable find, such a gem. She’s self-actualized, she’s just herself, nice and sweet, professional.”

Working with Nogueira as well as director Craig Gillespie taught Ridley a lot about working in films. During one of their readthroughs before the start of shooting, Gillespie made a sketch of the cave scene, where he drew Ruthye and Kara, with arrows of where they’d move in that scene. “I loved how he envisioned that scene to be and the way that he explains things,” says Ridley. “And learning different terms and phrases that he used will really help me for my future as well, because different directors have different methods and ways.”

Ridley also enjoyed working with her costars, who all helped her enjoy her first movie-starring experience. Prior to “Supergirl,” she had done work on TV, most notably on “The Witcher” and “3 Body Problem.” “Milly is such a dream to work with. I really look up to her,” says Ridley. “She taught me so much, and she’s such an amazing actress. And I think Kara is such a strong and emotional character and Milly really takes on all of those emotions and really showcases her talent. I loved working with her. She’s a bit like a big sister.”

Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, with Krypto, in “Supergirl”

Matthias Schoenaerts, who plays the villainous Krem, made quite an impression on Ridley when they first met. “I met him on my second day of filming, when we were doing the scene where my family gets murdered,” shares Ridley. “I’d never met him before, and he was in full costume, hair, makeup… I hadn’t seen any pictures of what he’d look like, so I was too scared to even make eye contact with him. I was physically shaking. I thought I liked horror films, but this was a different kind of fear, and I think that really helped with the scene because it was the first time I was seeing him and the first time Ruthye was seeing him. So, to channel all those emotions, that really helped a lot. But under all of the prosthetics and under all of the makeup and the creepy voice, he is such a nice guy and he’s really fun to work with.”

Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem in “Supergirl”

Ridley also has a fun and sweet anecdote to share about Jason Momoa, who plays Lobo. “He almost brings a rock n’ roll Super-Villain vibe to Lobo, which I also really like. He’s such a great actor and he’s also really kind as well, because when he had to strangle me, he was always making sure that the blades on his gloves weren’t hurting me,” shares Ridley with a laugh.

Ridley hopes that audiences will be inspired by Supergirl. “I think that she’s such an inspirational character, and especially younger children who are growing up watching all of these superhero films, they can really look up to Kara and think, wow, I want to be as brave as her when I’m older. If she can make her dream come true, so can I. I don’t need to just dream it, but I can make it reality. And I feel like Supergirl really is the definition of girl power. Every kid wants to find their superhero. I’m just happy I found mine.”

Jobstreet by SEEK highlights growing importance of equality and inclusive values in Filipino workplaces

Shining the spotlight on equality and belonging in workplaces, Jobstreet by SEEK reports that the Philippines leads Southeast Asia in workplace Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) adoption, with 63% of companies implementing formal DEI initiatives, far above the regional average of 52%, based on their Hiring, Compensation, and Benefits Report in 2025.

In Jobstreet by SEEK’s latest Happiness Index Report, company values are among the highest drivers of happiness at work. Employees are more likely to feel a sense of pride and belonging when they work in an environment where diverse perspectives are respected, and their personal values are reflected in the organization’s culture.

Across the country, workplace inclusion is increasingly being reflected in everyday practices, with many organizations adapting initiatives designed to create safer, fairer, and more welcoming work environments and making meaningful strides toward creating more inclusive spaces for everyone.

The report reveals that the most common initiatives implemented include deploying policies that address workplace discrimination and harassment, as well as establishing employee resource groups or affinity networks that provide safe spaces for connection and community-building.

Education continues to play an important role in fostering understanding and inclusion. As a result, the leading online job platform shared that more companies have started providing unconscious bias training, mentorship and sponsorship programs for underrepresented groups to help create pathways for professional growth. Many are also conducting regular diversity and inclusion surveys or assessments to better understand employee experiences and identify areas for improvement.

“Inclusion goes beyond representation; it’s about creating workplaces where people feel safe to be themselves. At Jobstreet by SEEK, we recognize that when employees feel seen, valued and respected, they are empowered to be at their best. By fostering a culture of belonging and equal opportunity, organizations can unlock the full potential of their people,” said Dannah Majarocon, Managing Director of Jobstreet by SEEK in the Philippines.

Looking ahead, momentum for workplace equity in the country shows no signs of slowing, with 23% of local businesses indicating that they may adopt formal DEI frameworks this year. This reflects growing efforts to build environments where everyone can thrive and succeed as their authentic selves.

For many professionals, an inclusive workplace is about more than company policies; it is about feeling safe to express one’s identity, being treated fairly and with respect, and having equal opportunities to grow and succeed. This growing focus reflects how organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of continuing efforts to ensure that every individual, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, age, background, or ability, feels seen, heard, and valued.

Summer is getting an awesome upgrade as Samsung is officially leveling up with the Galaxy A-Team by introducing four trailblazers who embody the Gen Z spirit. Joining the group are versatile lead Ashtine Olviga, new Gen Z icon Caprice Cayetano, chart-topping musical artist Maki, and screen favorite Will Ashley.

More than just ambassadors, they represent the diverse facets of a generation that refuses to be put in a box. This new squad is here to show you how to step up your A-game with the Galaxy A57 5G | A37 5G and finally start living the dream life you have bookmarked.

Ashtine: The Multi-Hyphenate Muse

For Ashtine Olviga, life needs harmony between the spotlight and behind-the screen brilliance. Whether she is prepping for a new role on set or recording her latest track, the Galaxy A57 5G | A37 5G’s 50MP Wide Camera is there to document her journey as a rising singer-actress. But even a multi-hyphenate needs a reset; during her breaks, Ashtine relies on her device to play harder and smoother with its 120HZ refresh rate, diving into her favorite mobile games to recharge before the next take.

Ashtine says, “I love how my Galaxy A57 5G actually helps me in my work and more, like when I’m on break, I can use it to take good videos for my feed or play a quick round before stepping back in the shoot.” By stepping up her A-game, she shows that being intentionally awesome means having a phone that can transition seamlessly from a professional creative tool to a high-performance gaming powerhouse.

Caprice: The Spark of Spontaneity

As the recent big winner of a reality TV show, Caprice Cayetano represents the unfiltered energy of Gen Z. Now that she is always on the move, from winning reality TV to preparing for her new show and endorsements, she uses the Galaxy A57 5G | A37 5G to explore more and capture spontaneous joy as it happens. Circle to Search with Google helps her search outfit ideas or finding the new song title she just listened to.

“I’m usually always on the go, para sa shoots man yan, content, or kahit everyday moments [be it on shoots, content, or everyday moments], so having a phone that can keep up really helps. With the Galaxy A57 5G | A37 5G, it’s easier for me to create and capture things anytime, lalo na [especially] during travel or spontaneous moments. It lets me stay creative while still enjoying what I’m doing,” Caprice shares. She embodies what it means to be intentionally awesome, and that is taking every opportunity to explore her world and sharing those authentic, unscripted moments with her community.

Maki: Stepping Up the Soundtrack of Life

For hitmaker Maki, inspiration does not wait for a studio session. Whether he is capturing a melody for a new hit or performing live for his world tour, he uses the Galaxy A57 5G | A37 5G to document his journey in high definition, especially with the improved Nightography.

Maki says, "I'm amazed it can still take good videos in low light, such as how recording studios are lit. And I still get to take sharp photos, even when moving around. It's great for filming content and I love how it actually matches my aesthetic and style." By stepping up his A-game, Maki shows that with the right tools, you can turn your creative passion into the soundtrack of a generation.

Will: Redefining the Gen Z Hustle

As a seasoned actor and the "Nation’s Son", Will Ashley knows that a dream life requires a device that works as hard as he does. From long days on set to late-night events, he relies on the Galaxy A57 5G | A37 5G to explore more and play harder without missing a beat. Thanks to the improved performance and larger cooling chamber, gaming stays chill even for long hours.

For Will, being intentionally awesome means having a phone that’s fast, reliable, and has a solid camera that helps him stay in the flow and focus on what matters. As Will notes, “For me, stepping up isn’t always big—it’s in the small improvements. And if a device can make things smoother and help me express myself better, then that’s already a step forward.”

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE review: A fun, action-packed version of the 80s animated series that fans, old and new, will enjoy!

 By: Edgar Allan E. Yu

I had an absolute blast watching the new MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE! As a longtime fan of the original TV series from my childhood, I admit I went in with low expectations, especially after being disappointed by the recent animated reboots. But this movie completely exceeded those doubts and delivered an experience that was both thrilling and heartfelt.

The cinematography, costumes, and set design are truly impressive, capturing the essence of the original series while elevating it to a whole new level. The film balances humor and heart perfectly, making it enjoyable for fans old and new. The fight scenes are nothing short of spectacular, packed with energy and creativity that keep you engage with the characters. The sound design by Daniel Pemberton with electric guitar work by Brian May of Queen, brought me back to the 80s sci-fi and fantasy films.

Nicholas Galitzine shines in the dual role of Adam and the heroic He-Man, bringing a relatable charm to the character. Camila Mendes as Teela is not only stunning but also brings strength and depth to her role. Jared Leto’s portrayal of Skeletor is pitch-perfect—this might just be his most fun and memorable role yet. Director Travis Knight, known for Bumblebee, masterfully maintains the campy, quirky vibe of the original show while raising the bar with intense, well-choreographed action sequences. Watching the film feels like seeing the beloved cartoon come to life in the best way possible.

This movie was clearly made with fans in mind, but it also opens the door wide for new generations of action and fantasy lovers. Don’t miss the mid-credits and post-credit scenes—there are three of them, and they set up what promises to be an exciting sequel. Now I'm on my way to a third screening !
