“They have no idea what horror is waiting for them next.” “Until Dawn” tandem David F. Sandberg and Gary Dauberman find creative ways to kill off characters in deadly time loop

Ella Rubin as Clover in Until Dawn, in PH cinemas on Friday, April 25

As fans of the Until Dawn videogame, director-producer David F. Sandberg and writer-producer Gary Dauberman wanted to create an ode to the horror genre for its film adaptation. Working within the timeloop structure of the game has brought in opportunities for a lot of creativity. “Every night, the story resets, taking us into a new horror genre,” Sandberg elaborates. “As a lifelong horror fan, it was a dream come true to work in all these subgenres. Every night the characters undergo what feels like a new chapter in a different story.”

Director Sandberg has been looking for a project that he can have fun with, and explore different aspects of horror. “Before learning of UNTIL DAWN, I’d been thinking about what a perfect project would be,” he says. “Would it be a slasher movie, or a supernatural story, or maybe a creature feature? UNTIL DAWN has it all; it’s several horror movies in one, which made me fall in love with it. We get to play with the entire horror toolbox. You never know what’s coming next in our story, because it changes every night.”

In Until Dawn, a group of friends are investigating the tragic disappearance of Melanie(Maia Mitchell), Clover’s(Ella Rubin) sister only to be murdered one by one as they explore an abandoned visitor center. Only, their story has just begun, and they’re forced to relive the night repeatedly. With only a limited number of deaths, the only way to survive is to make it until dawn.

Genre tropes are combined in an unpredictable tale of terror in Until Dawn. This, “allows us to have the fun of killing off our characters,” says Dauberman. “It was both a challenge and tremendous fun because we had the freedom to say, ‘Yeah, f*** it, let’s just kill him.’”

Fans of the game will no doubt enjoy the theatrical experience of Until Dawn, and are in for a treat with easter eggs scattered throughout the film. Producer Asad Qizibash, who is also the SVP Head of Publishing, Studio Business Group and Head of PlayStation Productions, Sony Interactive Entertainment, is happy to see how the film turned out, and how it incorporated aspects of the original game. “PlayStation Productions serves as a vessel for top creators to translate their passion for gaming into compelling narratives across various media. Being fans of the game themselves, David, Gary and their cast and crew have worked closely with our team at PlayStation Productions to make sure the film captured what fans love most about the Until Dawn world. And while you don’t need to have played the game to enjoy the movie’s twists and turns, there’s a good chance that fans will spot some cool references to the original story,” Qizibash says.

Don’t miss the chance to watch Until Dawn as it opens Philippine cinemas on Friday, April 25.

About “Superman”

“Superman,” DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

DC Studios heads Peter Safran and Gunn are producing the film, which Gunn directs from his own screenplay, based on characters from DC, Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

The film stars David Corenswet (“Twisters,” “Hollywood”) in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (the “X-Men” movies, “Juror #2”) as Lex Luthor. The film also stars Edi Gathegi (“For All Mankind”), Anthony Carrigan (“Barry,” “Gotham”), Nathan Fillion (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, “The Suicide Squad”), Isabela Merced (“Alien Romulus”), Skyler Gisondo (“Licorice Pizza,” “Booksmart”), Sara Sampaio (“At Midnight”), María Gabriela de Faría (“The Moodys”), Wendell Pierce (“Selma,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), Alan Tudyk (“Andor”), Pruitt Taylor Vince (“Bird Box”) and Neva Howell (“Greedy People”).

“Superman” is executive produced by Nikolas Korda, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars Winther. Behind the camera, Gunn is joined by frequent collaborators, including director of photography Henry Braham, production designer Beth Mickle, costume designer Judianna Makovsky and composer John Murphy, along with editors Craig Alpert (“Deadpool 2,” “Blue Beetle”), Jason Ballantine (the “IT” films, “The Flash”) and William Hoy (“The Batman”).

“A MINECRAFT MOVIE” IS A BOX OFFICE BLOCK-BUSTER, OPENS WITH $301M AT THE INTERNATIONAL BOX OFFICE, NO. 1 IN PH

Sebastian Eugene Hansen in “A Minecraft Movie,” now showing in cinemas.

“A Minecraft Movie” is the biggest movie to open this weekend, scoring the second highest international opening ever for a videogame movie adaptation.

The Jared Hess-directed film, based on the best-selling video game of all time, took in a whopping $301 million at the global box office on its first few days in cinemas. In the Philippines, it opened at No. 1, and did very well in other overseas markets too, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Mexico and China. It’s a certified hit in the United States as well, where it opened at $157 million.

Audiences love “A Minecraft Movie,” giving it a B+ CinemaScore. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an audience rating of 87%.

In the film, four misfits – Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) – find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative… the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

Watch the trailer: https://youtu.be/OtGJmI5qQFg?si=Q9VtAVxVDoQgIBOy

Momoa, who also produces the movie, shares, “I think it’s my first movie I’ve ever done like this – a live-action movie where it’s going into any world like this, big or small, but it just happened to be the biggest one in history. It was my first, and it’s amazing.”

Jack Black adds, “I can feel it out there, all of the Minecrafters that are excited about this movie. I think there’s a lot of people out there who can’t believe it’s really happening, that it’s really real. I could feel it when I posted about it, that, ‘Oh, I’m gonna be in Minecraft’ post where I just did a photograph of me reading a Minecraft for Dummies book, and it got millions of likes, and it was, ‘Oh, it’s bubbling out there.’ It’s a phenomenon; this game has been loved by millions and millions all over the world for years now, and I think this movie is a big deal for a lot of people, because now it’s generational. There’s kids who have grown up and are out in the world working and living and have families of their own. It’s been that long that the game has been part of our world, so it’ll be cool to finally bring that universe into cinemas.”

Get ready to craft your world. Watch “A Minecraft Movie,” now showing only in cinemas. #MinecraftMovie
