Sunnies invests in Philippine education with a 10-classroom commitment with Generation HOPE

Sunnies turned over two new public school classrooms to Muzon Elementary School in Alitagtag, Batangas as part of their 10-classroom commitment with Generation HOPE. In photo are (from left) Muzon Elementary School Principal Edwin Marasigan, Department of Education OIC Chief Education Supervisor, School Governance and Operations Division Dr. Mario B. Maramot, Alitagtag, Batangas Municipal Mayor Jo-Ann Ponggos, Sunnies Founders Eric Dee, Bea Soriano-Dee, Georgina Wilson, and Jess Wilson, HOPE Business Development Manager Selena Ortiga, and HOPE Partner Relations & Strategic Alliances Angel Samson Antonio.

HOPE, the Philippines’ first certified B Corp and a pioneering impact organization, together with Sunnies Studios, a well-loved Filipino lifestyle brand, has officially turned over two newly built public school classrooms at Muzon Elementary School in Alitagtag, Batangas, part of a broader effort to improve learning spaces amid the country’s ongoing classroom shortage that continues to impact millions of students nationwide.

The classroom turnover marks the first milestone in Sunnies’ pledge to fund a total of 10 classrooms through HOPE’s flagship Generation HOPE campaign, a movement that brings together like-minded organizations to help close the education infrastructure gap in underserved communities.

New HOPE classrooms were built for the Grade 5 students of Muzon Elementary School, giving them a brighter and better place to learn.

Reflecting on this milestone, HOPE Founder Ms. Nanette Medved-Po shared, “I really thought we should approach the most beloved brands in the country and say we want to do something bigger, and we want to do it together. To inspire the nation to nation-build for education, we have to do it with the support of brands and businesses in the country. We are deeply grateful to Sunnies for partnering with us on this important mission.”

As part of their long-term commitment, Sunnies is supporting the construction of classrooms in high-need public schools across the country. This initiative directly aligns with HOPE’s mission to provide every Filipino child access to safe, nurturing spaces where they can develop essential skills for a brighter future.

HOPE Business Development Manager Ms. Selena Ortiga speaks about the importance of HOPE’s partnership with Sunnies in building classrooms and creating opportunities for Filipino students.

“We are incredibly excited to kick off this meaningful partnership with Sunnies through this classroom turnover,” said Ms. Selena Ortiga, Business Development Manager of HOPE.

“Every classroom we build represents more than just four walls, it’s a place for learning, dreaming, and transformation. Sunnies’ commitment of 10 classrooms will create ripple effects that reach far beyond the students inside them.”

This collaboration not only helps address the country’s classroom shortage but also sets a compelling example of how brands can lead with purpose. Through Generation HOPE, purpose-driven businesses are turning everyday decisions into long-term, meaningful change.

Sunnies Studios Co-Founder and Head of Product Development Ms. Bea Soriano Dee and Muzon Elementary School Principal Edwin Marasigan exchange Philippine flags, a symbolic tradition observed in all HOPE classroom turnovers.

“We’ve always believed that style and substance can go hand in hand,” said Ms. Bea Soriano-Dee, Co-Founder and Head of Product Development at Sunnies Studios. “Partnering with HOPE allows us to make a meaningful contribution where it’s needed most. Education is something we deeply value, and we’re proud to help provide learning spaces that empower the next generation.”

Sunnies’ partnership with HOPE is part of a larger journey toward being a more mindful and responsible brand. From supporting public education to reducing their environmental footprint through sustainable product design, Sunnies continues to find ways to make a lasting impact.

In June, Sunnies and HOPE introduced Sunnies Studios X HOPE Clean Lens, a safe and gentle lens cleaner to help you see through your lens better, as their first co-branded product, while an everyday staple designed to keep you hydrated while on the go is set to be unveiled soon.

Inside the HOPE classroom at Muzon Elementary School in Alitagtag, Batangas.

The 10 classrooms funded by Sunnies will serve as long-term investments in the country’s future, opening doors, raising aspirations, and helping Filipino students take confident steps toward their dreams.

Department of Education Secretary Sonny Angara praised the initiative, saying, “We thank HOPE for their past initiatives, but this is something different, something truly game-changing, made possible with the support of the Philippines’ private sector. Partnerships like this show how the private sector can help shape the future of our students.”

To date, HOPE has built over 144 classrooms across the country, starting with every bottle of water sold, and now expanding through co-branded products and purpose-led partnerships.

Ayala Malls Cinemas exclusively brings Mike Flanagan’s genre-bending film “The Life of Chuck,” based on Stephen King’s acclaimed novella, to PH cinemas August 20

With sneak previews in select Ayala Malls Cinemas on August 16

Brace for the latest cinematic journey at Ayala Malls Cinemas as it exclusively brings “The Life of Chuck,” written and directed by Mike Flanagan based on the novella of the same name by Stephen King. Starring a strong ensemble cast led by Tom Hiddleston with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mark Hamill, Jacob Tremblay and Matthew Lillard, “The Life of Chuck” opens August 20, with sneak previews on August 16 in the following Ayala Malls Cinemas: Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Glorietta, TriNoma, Bonifacio High Street, U.P. Town Center, Capitol Central, Centrio, Abreeza, Solenad and Harbor Point.

A home for stories that matter, Ayala Malls Cinemas’ passion for unforgettable curated exclusive films for its patrons paves for an all-new uplifting experience as “The Life of Chuck” is poised to start meaningful conversations with its life-affirming story – a celebration of joy, art and humanity.

From the hearts and minds of Stephen King and director Mike Flanagan, “The Life of Chuck” tells the extraordinary story of an ordinary man. This unforgettable, genre-bending tale celebrates the life of Charles “Chuck” Krantz (Hiddleston) as he experiences the wonder of love, the heartbreak of loss, and the multitudes contained in all of us.

“Life of Chuck” is a departure from what both King and Flanagan are known for. But while Flanagan made his name in the industry because of horror hits such as “Oculus,” “Doctor Sleep” and “The Haunting of Hill House,” King – dubbed the “King of Horror” thanks to genre classics that include “Carrie,” “The Shining” and “It” – has always exhibited an incredibly humanistic approach to storytelling and has straddled a lot of genres beyond just horror, including “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile,” both of which were adapted into films that were nominated for multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

“The Life of Chuck” celebrates the life of Charles “Chuck” Krantz told in three parts, backwards over time. Though it has elements of fear and grief surrounding death, the film still feels very hopeful and life-affirming. “I’ve never worked on something more joyful. I’ve never worked on anything like this – a movie that does not have one ounce of cynicism. I wanted so badly for it to exist in the world for my children. This is a movie I wanted them to be able to find in their lives when they might need it. And because it’s especially a new thing for me. I wanted to protect that swelling in my heart that I felt when I read it,” says director Flanagan.

Photo credit: Pioneer Films / Ayala Malls Cinemas

It’s a wonderful feeling that audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival experienced as well. “The Life of Chuck” won the People’s Choice Award at the 2024 TIFF. Flanagan hopes that more movie audiences will experience the peace, hope, joy and affirmation he felt while reading the novella and working on the movie. “I hope the movie helps people look at our world today, at the challenges of each of our individual lives, and encourages them to sometimes put down the briefcase and let yourself dance, whatever that means to you, whatever kind of expression of joy dancing represents, you know, whether that’s painting or just being with family, writing, being athletic, you know, all these different ways that we can let our hearts out,” says Flanagan.

Ayala Malls Cinemas, strategically nestled in every bustling city in the country, brings “The Life of Chuck” within reach to every film enthusiast – from students to cineastes – and packs in a seamless comfortable experience with plush seats, updated technology, ease of ticket purchase and quality snacks always available at each cinema branch. WEAPONS,” THE MYSTERIOUS NEW HORROR/THRILLER FROM “BARBARIAN” DIRECTOR ZACH CREGGER, IS CERTIFIED 100% FRESH BY CRITICS. OPENS ONLY IN CINEMAS AND IMAX AUGUST 6

Photo courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures

“It’s so rare to watch a movie and not know where it’s going, what’s going to happen,” says Zach Cregger, writer/director/producer of horror/thriller “Weapons.” “And I feel confident that that’s the case with ‘Weapons.’”

The latest movie from Cregger, writer/director of cult hit “Barbarian,” has impressed critics – “Weapons” currently has a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. IGN described “Weapons” as “an absolutely delicious, scary-yet-funny blockbuster that never lets up… The mystery of a mass disappearance and its impact on a small town unfold in a fascinatingly layered way that gives every character a chance to shine; the wise decision to break their stories up into multiple, time-scrambling chapters creates multiple cliffhangers that set up a shattering finale.”

SlashFilm was all praises as well. “A wonderful mixture of bad vibes and macabre fun, ‘Weapons’ is one of the best horror movies of the year, and further confirmation that writer-director Zach Cregger is one of the most exciting voices in the genre right now,” they wrote.

AwardsWatch commended the film, too, calling it “a chilling masterclass in suspense and POV storytelling that exposes a culture with dwindling empathy that tolerates dehumanizing acts.”

In their 5-star review of the movie, CinemaBlend described “Weapons” as the best horror movie in what has been a remarkable year for horror movies. “It’s intimate while also being epic, it’s scary while expertly utilizing humor as punctuation, and even the most dedicated cinephiles will be rocked by its surprises. It’s perfect and a must-see,” they wrote in their review.

In “Weapons,” when all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance. “Weapons” stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, with Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.
