Inspiring Journeys of Academic Growth and Excellence of Filipinos in the EU

PRESS RELEASE

From the stage of the European Higher Education Fair (EHEF) to success stories across the EU, the journey continues this year. EHEF celebrates not just opportunities, but also the inspiring achievements of Filipino students who once walked the halls of the fair. Now scholars, professionals, and changemakers in various fields, these Goodwill Ambassadors stand as living proof of how education can open doors to global excellence, cross-cultural growth, and lifelong learning impact.

“The EHEF is more than a fair; it’s a bridge and a pathway that connects dreams to possibilities, and talent to opportunities waiting in the EU,” said EU Ambassador H.E. Massimo Santoro.

From Policy Studies to Public Service

Oliver James Soriano Dulay, Germany’s Goodwill Ambassador, embodies global citizenship shaped by education and purpose. A Helmut Schmidt Scholarship recipient under DAAD, he earned his Master’s in Analysis and Design of Policies and Security Studies in 2023. Now a Medico-Legal Officer III at the Commission on Human Rights, Oliver upholds justice, human rights, and public service through his work.

“My journey was transformative, teaching me the value of critical thinking. Studying in the EU is not just about academics; it’s about growing as a global citizen. The world is our home. Embrace this chance to learn, grow, and breathe excellence,” said Dulay.

Bridging Cultures, Building Excellence

Jessica Isabelle Badua, Spain’s Goodwill Ambassador, exemplifies how international education bridges cultures and builds leaders. A British Council IELTS Prize Scholar and recipient of the Premio Extraordinario Fin de Máster, she earned her Bilingual Master’s in International Relations and Migrations at the University of Cádiz and a BA in European Languages (cum laude) from UP Diliman. Now an Assistant/Archivist at the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, Jessica continues to promote collaboration and diversity, shaped by her EU academic and professional journey.

Badua shared, “Studying in the EU is about growth, discovery, and building lifelong connections. If you have the opportunity to return to the Philippines, use what you have learned to give back and help create positive change. Alternatively, if you become part of something bigger internationally, that’s great too!”

Nurturing Innovation Through Science and Service

Johnrell Zuniega, France’s Goodwill Ambassador, shows how scientific collaboration drives innovation. A 2024 PhD graduate in Agroresources, Food, Bio products and Nutrition from L'Institut Agro Montpellier, he has contributed to sustainable plant protection research and presented internationally. Now an Assistant Professor at UP Los Baños, he continues linking European research excellence with Filipino agricultural development while actively engaging in community and professional networks.

According to Zuniega, “This experience showed me that excellence is not about individual achievement, but about learning together and uniting diverse perspectives to solve global challenges.”

Learning Without Limits

Frances Lee Sanchez, Italy’s Goodwill Ambassador, embodies how education opens minds and builds purpose beyond borders. A Master’s graduate in International Management from Italy, she presented research on generative AI’s impact on Metro Manila e-commerce consumers. Now a Virtual Assistant for an Australian firm and a Faculty Member at Dr. Carlos Lanting College, Frances inspires students to pursue excellence and embrace global perspectives, proving that learning knows no boundaries.

“Had I not studied in Italy, I would not have gained this perspective. That experience sparked in me a dream: to return to the Philippines and share what I have learned with Filipino students. My EU higher education equipped me with knowledge, skills, and a global outlook that I now carry with purpose,” said Frances Sanchez.

Transforming Through Science

Alexis Cabahug Achacoso, Hungary’s Goodwill Ambassador, exemplifies how education and research drive excellence. A PhD candidate in Chemistry at the University of Debrecen, he explores innovations in MRI probe technology. Active in mentoring and student leadership, Alexis promotes collaboration and growth among international scholars. Describing his EU experience as transformative, he continues to advance science while inspiring young Filipinos to learn, lead, and create meaningful change.

As the EHEF marks another year of empowering Filipino learners, the stories of its Goodwill Ambassadors stand as proof that education in the EU goes beyond degrees, it shapes leaders, nurtures innovation, and inspires service. Each alumnus carries forward the EHEF spirit of excellence, bridging nations through knowledge and purpose.

Director Bill Condon brings back Old Hollywood Glamour in "Kiss Of The Spider Woman"

By: Edgar Allan E. Yu

"Kiss of the Spider Woman" (2025) is a remarkable adaptation that brilliantly brings to life the essence of the 1992 stage musical and the 1976 novel by Argentine author Manuel Puig. This prison drama/musical is not just a retelling; it’s an experience that captivates with its rich storytelling and stunning performances.

Jennifer Lopez shines in one of her most visually ambitious film roles to date, showcasing her incredible talent as she sings and dances with unparalleled energy. Her performance is a testament to her versatility, proving once again why she remains a powerhouse in Hollywood. Diego Luna complements her perfectly, exuding charm and charisma that keeps audiences engaged throughout the film.

However, it’s Tonatiuh who delivers a career-defining turn that steals the show. His breakout performance adds depth and emotional weight to this already compelling narrative, making him an actor to watch in future projects.

The film artfully combines old-Hollywood musical glamour with pressing social relevance, creating a unique blend that resonates with contemporary audiences. "Kiss of the Spider Woman" not only entertains but also provokes thought about themes of love, sacrifice, and resilience within oppressive circumstances. Don’t miss this cinematic gem; it’s sure to leave an indelible mark long after the credits roll.

Ayala Malls Cinemas exclusively brings “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” starring Jennifer Lopez and directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon, to Philippine cinemas. NOW SHOWING!

Ayala Malls Cinemas continues to bring prestigious and highly acclaimed films to Philippine cinemas with their exclusive release of “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” a movie musical based on the acclaimed 1976 novel Kiss of the Spider Woman by Argentinian writer Manuel Puig and the Tony Award®-winning Broadway musical of the same name by the multiple Tony Award®-winning playwright Terrence McNally (Master Class, Ragtime) and composer/lyricist team John Kander and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago).

Starring Emmy® and Grammy Award® nominated superstar Jennifer Lopez, Emmy Award® nominee Diego Luna (Andor, Y tu mamá también), and Tonatiuh (Promised Land, Vida), “Kiss of the Spider Woman” is now showing exclusively in Ayala Malls Cinemas. The film is directed by Bill Condon, the Academy Award®-winning writer-director known for such films as Gods and Monsters, Chicago, Dreamgirls and Beauty and the Beast.

With this latest offering, Ayala Malls Cinemas continues to be a choice destination for premium and curated entertainment. “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is set in 1983 Argentina. With the country’s military dictatorship waging a brutal war against its political opponents, prisoners Valentín (Luna) and Molina (Tonatiuh) find themselves thrown together in a cramped cell. Initially at odds, they begin to bond as Molina narrates the story of his favorite movie, “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” A colorful fantasia of song and dance starring screen siren Ingrid Luna (Lopez), the film follows a woman attempting to outrun a mythical predator who kills with her kiss. Jointly visualizing the dazzling Technicolor adventure, the men escape the indignities of confinement, and their shared experience leads them toward hope, grace and connection.

“Musicals have been having a resurgence since they were first declared dead in 1931,” said Condon about the cultural resurgence movie musicals are enjoying of late. “I think they’ve been resuscitated more often than Dracula. One of the reasons the genre always bounces back is that, as with suspense and horror, musicals are enhanced by the communal experience. In recent years we’ve been searching for reasons to go back to the theater, and

musicals, when they work, give you that extra jolt of pleasure.”

The film’s vivid colors, larger-than-life musical numbers and suspenseful scenes from the political part of the story make “Kiss of the Spider Woman” a cinematic experience best enjoyed on the big screen.

“It’s easy to get caught in the web of ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman,’” said Movieweb in its review.

USA Today also gave the film a positive review, praising the talented cast: “Lopez struts and vamps like an A-list champ, Diego Luna oozes gravitas, but everybody – and hopefully some Oscar voters – will remember this “Kiss” as a star-making turn for the fabulous Tonatiuh.”

“‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ is astounding,” The Film Maven lauded the new adaptation in her review. “If you aren't a musical fan, will you be in hell? Probably. But for those who enjoy a sweeping musical story, or for lovers of Old Hollywood, you'll be in Heaven for the next two hours.

“It’s an emotional roller coaster, so bring plenty of tissues,” says Mason Thames of “REGRETTING YOU,” in cinemas October 22

Once director Josh Boone read the script for Regretting You, the movie adaptation of the best-selling novel by Colleen Hoover, he jumped right in.

“Regretting You is a coming-of-age story about relationships between parents and children growing up, like my previous films Stuck in Love and The Fault in Our Stars,” shares Boone. “I have always been and always will be attracted to movies about families, specifically kids who are finding out that their parents are fallible. That’s an important moment in anybody’s life.”

In Regretting You, Allisom Williams and Mckenna Grace play the mother-daughter duo of Morgan and Clara Grant, respectively, as they explore what’s left behind after a devastating accident reveals a shocking betrayal and forces them to confront family secrets, redefine love, and rediscover each other. Regretting You is a story of growth, resilience, and self-discovery in the aftermath of tragedy, also starring Dave Franco, Mason Thames and Sam Morelos, with Scott Eastwood, Willa Fitzgerald and Clancy Brown.

The story works on multiple levels, says Allison Williams, which makes it perfect for a wide audience. “There’s so much contained within this movie,” says Williams, who plays Morgan Grant. “When I’m talking to another mother, I say it’s about a mom who is watching her daughter go through a moment that completely changed her own life. She is hoping that her daughter won’t do the same thing, but at the same time she does not regret having her daughter. When I talk to younger people, it’s about a couple that’s clearly meant to be together. That could actually be referring to either of the romances in the movie. It is also about a relationship that begins at the moment when two kids are about to embark on a new adventure in the world. That’s part of what made it so meaty and such fun to work on.”

For Mckenna Grace, who plays Morgan’s teen daughter Clara, the story was also a big reason she wanted to be part of the film; it was the quality of the script that impressed her from the start. “It hits all the right places,” Grace says. “It’s really sad, but still such fun. When I read the book, I really connected to Clara. The dialogue felt so natural that I sometimes threw in things from the book that weren’t in the script, but that were so right for Clara. Josh created such a fun and safe environment to create in that it was easy. He’s so much funnier himself than I ever expected.”

When director Boone offered Dave Franco the chance to play Morgan’s love interest, Jonah, Franco seized the opportunity to play a character different from what he’s played before. “I have played degenerates in recent films, so when he [Josh] called and asked if I was open to playing a nice guy, I was ready,” says Franco. “It is fun to play morally ambiguous characters, but it’s also nice to play someone that audiences can root for.

“There is a lot of drama in this movie and a lot of romance,” continues Franco. “Mckenna once said that she’s either crying or kissing or doing both in every single scene in this movie. And that’s not far from the truth. We’re hitting the broad spectrum of emotion.”

Mason Thames, who plays Miller (Clara’s love interest), agrees. “This movie can be very sad, but it’s also very sweet, often funny and a bit of a journey. I hope the audience leaves crying. It’s an emotional roller coaster, so bring plenty of tissues.”

Bestselling author Colleen Hoover, whose stories are known for powerful emotions, tumultuous relationships and unforgettable characters, shares: “Audiences will have a fun and emotional experience. It is something you can watch with friends and family and feel good about, then go back and watch it a second time with a different group of friends. It’s just a real feel good movie.”

There are certainly heartbreaking moments in the movie, but ultimately the filmmakers want audiences to be uplifted by the tale. “No matter what, life keeps going and things keep happening. says Boone. “You are going to laugh again. I say that from experience.”

“PRIMATE” excites horror fans at Fantastic Fest with gnarly kills and practical effects. Watch the official trailer, out now!

“Primate” opens in Philippine cinemas January 2026

They thought he was family. Primate, directed by Johannes Roberts and starring Johnny Sequoyah, Jessica Alexander, and Troy Kotsur, Victoria Wyant, Gia Hunter, Benjamin Cheng, Charlie Mann and Tienne Simon, had its world premiere to enthusiastic applause from horror and genre fans at Fantastic Fest in September, and will open in Philippine cinemas in January 2026.

Primate had early screenings at popular genre festivals Fantastic Fest and Beyond Fest in the US, where horror, sci-fi and fantasy fans gather annually to celebrate their favorite genres. Fans enjoyed the gnarly kills and praised the film for its use of practical effects.

“Primate does for monkeys what Jaws did for sharks, only with more fur, sharper teeth, and a far greater sense of blood and guts. It’s punk rock horror at its snarling, cymbal-crashing best,” posted Bryan Kluger of Boomstick.

“PRIMATE is Cujo for chimpanzees, old school nature-gone-rogue creature feature at its most entertaining and morbidly hilarious. The film makes the most of its creative premise of a bunch of young adults trapped in a house with rabies-infected pet chimp. Gnarly kills balanced with some hilarious moments of Ben the chimp, who is actualized with some incredible practical effects. Great start to #FantasticFest,” posted The Holo Files.

Anthony of No Assembly Required posted about the film: “An ode to Stephen King & bloody practical effects. A rambunctious audience horror that is as brutal as it is outrageous. Johannes Roberts loves his intense pool scenes. Outstanding puppetry giving every fright emotional weight. Had the whole crowd hollering.”

“#PRIMATE at #FantasticFest is a blast of a killer monkey horror flick and reminder that practical FX will always reign supreme. Many shocking kills and crowd inciting moments backed by a fun score. Even when it’s silly, it works bc the movie is smart enough to be in on the joke,” posted JoBlo.

“Primate is the creature feature you’ve been waiting for—intense, bloody, and brutal as hell. If you ever needed a reason not to have a pet monkey, this is it. The practical effects are jaw-dropping, leaving me wincing and squirming in my seat from start to finish. Holy sh*t, this was epic. Bodies fly, limbs tear, and there’s absolutely no monkey business here. Johannes Roberts returns with a bloody vengeance, delivering pure carnage,” posted According to Seth.

“#Primate is the most fun I’ve had with an animal attack movie since Lake Placid. Intense, creepy, and find plenty of moments for laughs. The score was like a greatest hits love letter to John Carpenter. Oh…and PRACTICAL FUCKIN CARNAGE CANDY!!! Total blast!” posted YouTuber Cody Leach.

Get ready to go bananas for Primate when it opens in Philippine cinemas January 2026. #PrimateMovie

Meet Clara Grant, played by Mckenna Grace in the movie adaptation of hit novel “Regretting You,” in PH cinemas October 22

12 fun facts about Mckenna Grace’s fascinating and feisty teen heroine in epic tragic romance

Mckenna Grace plays Clara Grant in Regretting You, from the best-selling author of It Ends with Us and the director of The Fault in Our Stars, in Philippine cinemas October 22

“Mckenna brings so much life to Clara,” says Allison Williams, who plays Morgan Grant, mom to Mckenna Grace’s Clara in the upcoming tragic romance Regretting You. “She’s an extraordinary actress.”

In Regretting You, movie adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name, Williams and Grace play the mother-daughter duo of Morgan and Clara Grant, respectively, as they explore what’s left behind after a devastating accident reveals a shocking betrayal and forces them to confront family secrets, redefine love, and rediscover each other. Regretting You is a story of growth, resilience, and self-discovery in the aftermath of tragedy, also starring Dave Franco, Mason Thames and Sam Morelos, with Scott Eastwood, Willa Fitzgerald and Clancy Brown. Directed by Josh Boone.

Watch the trailer: https://youtu.be/eAQzHAFixzM

Shortly after the trailer was released in August, fans quickly fell in love with Grace, with one fan commenting, “OMG, Mckenna is perfect as Clara.”

Find out more about Clara Grant and the young actress that breathes life into the beloved character in the upcoming movie adaptation.

1. Nineteen-year-old Mckenna Grace started acting at age 5 and has starred in everything from Captain Marvel to The Handmaid’s Tale, for which she was nominated for an Emmy award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. In Regretting You, the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s beloved novel of the same name, Grace plays Clara Grant, a young woman torn apart by grief after a family tragedy, who falls in love with a boy that her mother, played by Allison Williams, most definitely does not approve of. “Clara has been such a special role for me,” says Grace. “She’s so complicated, mature and immature all at once.”

2. Clara’s boyfriend, Miller, is played by Mason Thames, who just so happens to be Mckenna Grace’s best friend in real life. “We already knew each other so well because we’ve been goofing off for the past year, doing all these stupid things,” Grace says of Thames. “And then, all of a sudden, we were working together, running around, having a blast!”

3. The set in this pic is of Miller’s bedroom, on which the production began its very first week of Regretting You. “I especially loved that first week,” remembers Grace. “Those scenes were all shot at Miller’s house, which had all these goats and horses.” And they weren’t the only animals on set, either. As always, Grace travelled on location with her beloved pet Yorkshire Terrier, Gizmo.

4. Clara and Miller love each other deeply. Although, during one big argument, Miller accuses Clara of using him to “piss off” her mom – something Grace concedes may well be true. “Clara does some things that she knows will piss off her mama,” Grace laughs. “The interesting thing is that sometimes I don’t think she knows there’s a part of her that’s doing it to piss her off. Sometimes she definitely does, though, and does it anyways!”

5. Clara and Miller share another love, too: the movies. And their passion extends to both sides of the camera. Clara’s big ambition is to go to her dream college, to study to become an actor. His is to direct. “Miller is a filmmaker, so he’s very creative,” notes Thames.

6. As well as the classics, Miller is a huge fan of romantic movies, which is perhaps why Thames calls him “a lover boy.” Amongst what Thames says are Miller’s “guilty pleasures” is Elizabethtown (hence the poster in his room) by Cameron Crowe, one of Regretting You director Josh Boone’s favorite filmmakers.

7. Clara has a great sense of humor and can be hilariously sarcastic. She is also quite captivating, especially if you’re Miller. “Whoever his first kiss was with, I bet it was nothing like his first kiss with Clara,” says Thames of when Miller and Clara’s romance first blooms. “That is a moment that everybody is looking for. And once you find it, it’s pretty special.”

8. Clara and Miller are both high school students. But while before the tragic family accident Clara is a straight-A student, after it she goes off the rails, rebelling against her mom’s rules. “There are a lot of bad decisions that Clara makes within her grief, just trying to figure herself out. Which I think makes her very human,” says Grace. “This film is about her and her mom trying to find each other again.

9. Regretting You’s director, Josh Boone, is well used to adapting beloved teen dramedies into box office smashes, having previously helmed huge 2014 hit, The Fault in Our Stars.

10. Music plays a key role in Regretting You, hence the R.E.M. logo on Boone’s hoodie in the photo showing Miller’s room. “Music is almost the starting point for me to even know whether to make a movie or not,” Boone says. “I worked at a record store for many years before I made movies, so the first thing I do is build a soundtrack. Music is important to Clara, too.”

11. Regretting You is a movie in many ways about buried secrets. Thankfully, in real life, the person who plays Clara is pretty good at keeping them. “I don’t have a lot of secrets of my own, but I am a vault for other people’s,” says Grace. “I’m somebody people tell a lot of secrets to. I never tell. I am a really, really good secret-keeper.”

12. In real life, Mckenna Grace is a musician herself. She has released over 30 songs since her debut single, “Haunted House,” in 2021. “Music writing,” she says, “is my therapy.”
