THE CALL OF THE WILD - A Breath-taking Adventure !

By Edgar Allan E. Yu

This the story of a dog named Buck, a St. Bernard-Scotch Collie mix, who was stolen out of his California home and sold to carry freight and be part of sled dogs in the icy mountains of the Alaskan Yukon. In the course of events that followed, he meets John Thornton (Harrison Ford) who took him under his care. This is based on Jack London's 1903 classic novel that is set during the 1890's Alaskan Gold Rush.

When I went to watch this movie, I didn't know that Buck and all of the animals in the film were CGI. They all looked so real. I did noticed though that Buck seemed to be capable of showing different emotions, much like humans did. But that didn't took me away from enjoying the film. There were scenes where the dogs were put to hard work, and some where they faced real danger. So it's only logical that they used CGI dogs to fully capture what they went through in the movie.

The cinematography is beautiful and breath-taking.  It made the audience feel like they were actually in the wilderness of the Yukon. Harrison Ford gives a fine performance as John Thornton. His interactions with Buck were funny and relatable. Made me wish my pet dog was still alive. Dan Stevens, Karen Gillan, Omar Sy also appeared in the movie. But the real star of the film is Buck, who is so cute and adorable, despite his size.

Director Chris Sanders, who also helmed Lilo & Stitch, How To Train Your Dragon, and The Croods, is on his first live-action film here. This family flick feels much like a Disney movie; even though it was made under 20th Century Fox, which is now owned by Disney. Rated PG-13. From 20th Century Studios. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG - Breaking Box-office Records !

By Edgar Allan E. Yu

Based on the widely popular SEGA video game, Sonic goes to Earth from his homeplanet, gets to meet a local sheriff and become his friend. Together they try to stop Dr. Robotnik who wants to use Sonic's powers for his evil deeds.

When the first trailer came out last year, fans were enraged about the character design of Sonic, and they threw all sorts of negative shots to the movie. The director acknowledged it and said that changes will happen. The release date was pushed back to February 2020. And after the crew's reworking on it, boy did they get it right !  Now the blue speedster looked much like his video game character, he's also cute and lovable !

The live action/CGI hybrid flick has lots of humor, plenty of high-speed action, and heart. Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik is perfect ! He is crazy, wacky, and maniacal, much like the way Jim Carrey was in the 1990s. James Marsden as the local sheriff Tom Wachowski is charming and affable. Ben Schwartz who lends his voice to Sonic brings a new facet to the blue blur. He is not just an alien who runs around everywhere, he can also be a friend and a superhero.

This live/CGI adaptation is aimed at kids and fans of the video games. But even adults and those who haven't played the games will enjoy it. I'm really happy that these videogame movies are getting better treatment and better success at the box office. Much like Detective Pikachu, and The Angry Birds movies. Note to fans - stay for the mid-credit scene. Directed by Jeff  Fowler (his directorial debut). Rated PG. From Paramount Pictures. Released through United International Pictures. Kapuso star Bianca Umali visits children affected by Taal Volcano eruption

Kapuso star Bianca Umali joined child-focused NGO World Vision in Laurel, Batangas last February 7 to visit and help distribute learners’ kits to about 400 school-aged children from Grade 1 to 7. Each kit contains a school bag, school supplies, and art
materials to help hundreds of children who temporarily stopped schooling due to the eruption.

As World Vision’s Youth Ambassador for Education, Bianca Umali hoped to inspire the children with a message of hope amidst difficult times brought by Taal Volcano  eruption.

"What happened to my province in the past few weeks is so heartbreaking, so I looked for ways on how to reach out to them. Good thing that being with World Vision as their
Ambassador for Education, through the organization’s relief efforts, I was able to connect to my fellow Batangueños. Sa mga kababayan ko, just keep the faith and stay
strong. I know that together, we can quickly recover from this and rise again," said Bianca Umali.

As Taal Volcano still indicates signs of volcanic threat to its surrounding communities, World Vision commits to assist affected families, including thousands of children whose
schooling have been disrupted for almost a month. Nine year old Jhylian from the locked-down village of Buso-buso said, "I used to have 10 notebooks but after Taal erupted, most of my school things were destroyed. Now, I  have only three notebooks for nine subjects. I'm worried what I will use after I've used
up all the pages of my three notebooks.”

According to the Department of Education’s (DEPED) report, at least 575,456 students coming from 1,034 schools are affected due to class suspensions. “Education in emergencies is crucial. A lot of children were not able to spare their bags or notebooks and worse, could not go back to their school because of the damages caused by the eruption. This should not stop them from learning though and that’s where we all come in - to support them in any way possible to keep them in school,”
says World Vision National Director Rommel Fuerte. “We are grateful to Bianca for making time to serve with us, despite her hectic schedule. The children and the people of Laurel are certainly encouraged and touched
by her,” added Fuerte.

Since 2017, Umali has been an active advocate and generous supporter to various World Vision’s campaigns for the benefit of children. Months ago, Umali offered her voice and influence to promote the “1,000 Girls” campaign and the “Hope Town” experiential booth at the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City.

To date, World Vision has reached 1,845 families with hygiene kits (soaps, undergarments, etc.) and non-food items (mosquito nets, blanket, and plastic mats). 12,000 individuals also received N95 dust masks while at least 4 child-friendly spaces
continue to provide psychosocial support to children in evacuation centers.

World Vision continues to appeal for support in providing learners’ kits to the communities affected by Taal’s eruption. Click this link to go to World Vision’s donation page: https://wvph.co/DonateForTaal. You may also call World Vision at (02) 8372-7777 or (0917) 866-4824.

“DOWNHILL” EXCLUSIVE AT AYALA MALLS CINEMAS STARTING FEB 12

Julia Louis-Dreyfus (TV’s “Veep”) and Will Ferrell star in the Sundance Film Festival hit comedy “Downhill” from the Oscar-winning co-writers of “The Descendants.”

To be shown exclusively at selected Ayala Malls Cinemas starting February 12, Searchlight Pictures’ “Downhill” tells the story of a married couple thrown into disarray as they are forced to reevaluate their lives and how they feel about each other after barely escaping an avalanche
during a family ski vacation in the Alps.

Directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash from a screenplay by Jesse Armstrong, and Faxon & Rash;
Searchlight Pictures’ “Downhill” also stars Zach Woods, Zoë Chao, Miranda Otto and Kristofer Hivju. It is inspired by the acclaimed 2014 Swedish film “Force Majeure.”

It’s the ski vacation of a lifetime for Pete (Ferrel) and Billie Stanton (Louis-Dreyfus) and their two boys: a week in the Austrian Alps. With both parents unplugged from their professional careers, the Stantons are – on the surface - ready for seven days of snowy family fun. What was poised to be a delightful week of skiing and togetherness instead becomes a series of awkward and emotionally fraught moments in which Pete and Billie have to be honest with themselves and each other in ways they hadn’t expected. Early in the trip, while having lunch at a mountainside restaurant, Pete and Billie have dramatically different responses to what is -unbeknownst to them - a controlled avalanche that appears
frighteningly out of control. Pete’s reaction stuns the family and throws the rest of their vacation and the couple’s marriage into chaos, as Billie reevaluates their relationship and each is forced to wrestle with their own sense of self.

Throughout all of this, directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash’s comedic touches and nuances shine through. “The idea fit into what we react to the most, which is character-driven ballets between comedy and drama,” Rash says. “It’s the thing we gravitate towards most in the storytelling
department.” Adds Faxon: “We are drawn to these types of mixed-genre projects because, to us, they feel the
most relatable. They mimic life’s unpredictable nature where daily stress or even tragic circumstances can often be accompanied by comedic moments and/or relief.”

The filmmakers recognized the universality of the script’s central questions: How well can two
people really know each other? And what happens when one of them does something totally unexpected?
“We wanted to balance this film with both the woman’s perspective as well as the man’s and examine how this random, yet incredibly significant, incident affects them both as individuals and as a couple,” Faxon says. “Inevitably, the characters are forced to reevaluate everything they thought to be true."

Watch Searchlight Pictures’ “Downhill” exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas: Greenbelt 3, Alabang Town Center, Trinoma, U.P. Town Center, Ayala Malls The 30th, Ayala Malls
Manila Bay, Bonifacio High Street and Ayala Malls Central Bloc. Book and buy your tickets at

BIRDS OF PREY And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn. Absolute Fun At The Movies !

By Edgar Allan E. Yu

Joker's long-time flame and sidekick Harley Quinn, whom we last saw in Suicide Squad, is given another movie to dazzle us all. This time in the wittingly or unwittingly titled BIRDS OF PREY And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn. Why wittingly or unwittingly ? Because it is clearly Harley Quinn's movie, not the Birds Of Prey. She's front and center of the film. (And no, I'm not complaining.) It starts off from her break-up with the Clown Prince of Crime, being bitter about it, then finds herself the target of many criminals she had wronged before. Margot Robbie, who is easily the best part of Suicide Squad, naturally gets her own movie, and she gets to fully flesh-out her character. Harley gets to narrate her story, even breaking the fourth wall ala Deadpool, in ways only Harley Quinn can. It's a no-brainer that Robbie is fantastic as Harley Quinn !

We also get to meet Dinah Lance/Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Helena Bertinelli/Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco). All of these girls are making their cinematic debut, and each of them were given their moment to shine. Notice that some changes were made to their comicbook or tv versions. I just wished they had given more screen time to the Huntress.

Ewan McGregor as bad guy Roman Sionis/Black Mask is really good in all his scenes, but I don't think he stole the show. His henchman, serial killer Victor Zsasz, played by Chris  Messina is just as good. There's some hint that there could be something more between them but it was never really explored. They do have great chemistry onscreen.

My favorite part of the film were the action pieces which were well-choreographed and looked amazing ! I never thought Harley Quinn could fight like that. There were elements of John Wick in all those fight scenes. Chad Stahelski who directed John Wick 2 & 3 was brought in as a second-unit director.

Overall it's a very colorful, stylish, wacky & wildly entertaining comic-book movie. I'm excited to see more of these ass-kicking girls. Rated R-16 for it's violence and language. Co-produced by Margot Robbie. Written by Christina Hodson who also wrote Bumblebee. Directed by Candy Yan who's on her first big-budget studio film. From Warner Bros. Pictures.  #BirdsOfPrey

PRESENTING THE LADIES OF DIVA2DIVALENTINES !

As solo performers, Kuh Ledesma and Zsa Zsa Padilla are so good at what they do. That’s why they are still active in the music industry long long after they started their careers. On February 13, 2020, Kuh (known as the Pop Diva) and Zsa Zsa (the Divine Diva) will join forces once again for Diva2DiValentines at the Manila Hotel’s Tent City.

“It’s truly a blessing that even after forty years I’m still doing concerts, and other things I’ve always done. But I will not credit everything coming my way to the talent God has given me. I got to where I am now because of my faith in Him,” Kuh says. “Meanwhile, I think it’s fun to be called a diva. Being a diva means you are larger than life.”

“I feel so blessed to still be here, because I feel that longevity is a gift that’s not given to all performers. Sometimes, no matter how hard they work, not even the most talented are able to stay long in this industry,” Zsa Zsa adds. “When it comes to the ‘Divine Diva’ title, Martin Nievera called me that when we did a Valentine show at the Araneta Coliseum. It caught on. I don’t mind it, and again, I feel lucky that it was given to me.”

These divas are good individually, but when you put them together, they become more than that. Their tandem is phenomenal, which is why their concert series Diva2Diva has been hugely successful in the Philippines, and all over the world as well. When asked why audiences embraced their tandem, Kuh explains it’s because they complement each other.

“My voice blends very well with Zsa Zsa’s, and we both like giving people an excellent show. We choose songs that people would like to hear. What I really admire about her is that she’s very professional. She represents herself well and she’s always on time. Talo niya ako doon,” she laughs.

The very first Diva2Diva show was held at the Philippine International Convention C hienter (PICC) in November of 2002. That marked the first time Kuh and Zsa Zsa shared a stage since they started their respective careers. It proved to be such a hit that they decided to go on the road together. Since then, Kuh and Zsa Zsa have taken Diva2Diva to Australia, Canada, and the United States. What’s more, they always performed to a sold-out crowd wherever they go.

Zsa Zsa says it’s because she and Kuh have very similar styles.

“Kuh is really artistic and has a lot of great ideas. She’s an independent woman, and her strength comes from her faith which is unwavering. Our singing styles are also influenced by Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross, both of whom we idolize. We also basically cater to the same crowd here and abroad,” says Zsa Zsa.

For Diva2DiValentines, they will be joined by Mitch Valdes and Nanette Inventor. Like Kuh and Zsa Zsa, Mitch and Nanette have enjoyed long, successful careers. Nanette, who prefers to be called the “Funny Lady of Songs,” is excited to share the stage with them again.

“A diva is one that shines. I let the light that God gave me shine through darkness. Beyond the behavior and talent, a diva lights up the stage and generates her own spotlight. So it's time for the diva in me to emerge,” she enthuses.

Mitch is equally excited to treat people to her unique brand of comedy, as well as her vocal stylings. She agrees that it’s tough to be a comedian these days because audiences have become more sensitive. But she’s still optimistic about the future of comedy here and abroad.

“It’s hard because of social media. But what’s very sad is the viciousness with which some attack what they don’t agree with. They destroy anyone who dares to think differently. Hopefully there will come a time when all forms of comedy can bloom again. I say this for music also.”

These divas’ repertoire includes a medley of their own hits, much-loved Broadway songs, and classic duets with fresh twists. Diva2DiValentines is set to be breathtaking, musically and visually.

Dinner will be served at 7:00 PM, and the show will start at 8:30 PM. For ticket inquiries and reservations, call 09202868895 or 09178139065. It will also go to Pampanga on Feb. 14 at the Clark Marriott Grand Ballroom. For more details on the Pampanga show, kindly call 0917-5197680, 0922-8226917 or +63 45 5985000 (Clark Marriott).

Long live the divas !

True Love Conquers All : #KwentongJollibee Valentine’s Series Celebrates Perfectly Imperfect Stories Of Real Love

MEDIA RELEASE

The country’s most loved fast-food chain, Jollibee is back with its latest, most anticipated #KwentongJollibee Valentine’s series. This 2020, the award-winning digital series delves into how true love conquers all - that beyond the romance, it takes hard work and commitment to make real love last.

“Relationships can be complicated when people set unrealistic expectations about love, believing that it’s always easy and picture-perfect especially in today’s digital age! This year, our goal was to highlight that the best love stories are those of couples who understand and
value true love, and the hard work and commitment that it takes to make it work,” shared Jollibee Global Brand Chief Marketing Officer, JFC Philippines Country Business Group
Marketing Head and concurrent Jollibee Philippines Marketing Head Francis Flores.

Valentine’s Day is no longer complete without Jollibee making viewers swoon and inspired by its #KwentongJollibee series. Last year’s episodes—“Choice”, “Proposal”, and “Anniversary”—encouraged fans to keep their faith in love and hit over 50M views on Facebook and YouTube. Jollibee, through its Jollibee Studios branded entertainment initiative, has produced up over 33 Kwentong Jollibee short films, garnered over 350 M views and nearly 700M in reach.

The Kwentong Jollibee series has cemented its industry leadership and the well-loved films continues to bag global and international recognition. In 2019 alone, the fast-food brand
brought home the APAC Tambuli Awards’ Gold Tambuli for the total Kwentong Jollibee campaign; three Bronze awards in the Family-Centered Brand category for Kwentong Jollibee Mother’s Day Series, Kwentong Jollibee Biyahe, Kwentong Jollibee Grand Thank You Project, and a Bronze award in the Seasons Celebration category for Kwentong Jollibee High Five
(Father’s Day). Since 2016, Kwentong Jollibee has also remained to be a regular in the YouTube Ad Leaderboard’s Top 10 Ads in the Philippines. In 2019, YouTube recognized Kwentong Jollibee: Choice and Schoolboy as its most effective ads for the year.

True love conquers all :
Jollibee kicked off the month of love by unveiling #KwentongJollibee Valentine’s Series 2020: #CoupleGoals”, “Space”, and “Apart” in an exclusive press preview held recently at Estancia Mall - Ortigas Cinemas. As today’s modern times have brought about varied definitions of love, the series theme “True Love Conquers All” aims to bring back the true definition of love.

Directed by Ianco dela Cruz (“Vow”, “Choice”), “#CoupleGoals” tells the story of Matt and Lisa, a happy couple who couldn’t be more perfect for each other, or so their social media photos say. Is their relationship as flawless as it appears?

“Space” follows the story of funnyman Dan, who goes out of his way to show his girlfriend Mae how much he cares but their differences have pushed the couple apart. Directed by Sigrid Bernardo, this episode begs the question: In the age where finding someone new is as easy as a swipe, is true love just as easy to find ?

Lovebirds Myles and Ron are the center of the story titled “Apart”, directed by Pepe Diokno. Myles is strong-willed and self-sufficient, and Ron feels like he doesn’t have a place in her world. Does true love prevail or are they better off apart?

Watch the three #KwentongJollibee films on Jollibee Studios
(www.youtube.com/user/jollibeedigital1) and on Jollibee’s Facebook page

JACE ROQUE BEATS K-POP BAND BTS ON ITUNES WITH HIS NEW SINGLE ‘DAY AND NIGHT’

Fresh from the success of his single “LOVE” (which has been viewed more than 300,000 times on Facebook and peaked at No. 25 on iTunes Philippines), top EDM artist Jace Roque has released yet another banger titled “Day and Night.”

“Day and Night” was made available in all digital platforms worldwide through AWAL (a Kobalt Music Group subsidiary) at midnight on January 31, 2020. It was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday Philippines playlist. It debuted at No. 12 on iTunes Philippines and climbed to No. 8 just hours later, beating “Black Swan” by K-Pop septet BTS and giving Jace his first Top 10 hit on the platform.

According to Jace, “As with my previous singles, ‘Day and Night’ is about my personal experience when it comes to love. It continues a story I've been telling since my first promo single "Everytime We Touch" up to my previous hit single ‘LOVE.’”

“In this chapter, I talk about a toxic relationship,” he adds. “A relationship wherein you both bring out the best and worst in each other. A constant push and pull. You’re polar opposites, yet you still choose to stay together despite your differences.”

Artists Without A Label or AWAL is a British distribution company and record label owned by Kobalt Music Group, the top independent music publisher in the UK. In the USA, it’s second only to Sony/ATV.

AWAL works with world-renowned artists like Betty Who, dedmau5, Jesse McCartney, and Lauv. Jace is one of only two Filipinos on AWAL. Fil-Brit Bailey May (through his group Now United) is the other.

Musically, “Day and Night” is a pop-EDM track. After all, that’s the genre Jace is known for. But in an effort to keep things fresh, he incorporated new sounds into this song.

“Aside from dance, EDM, and pop, I also fused disco and dubstep into ‘Day and Night,’” shares Jace. “But I made sure to keep it club-ready and radio-friendly.”

When asked if he has high hopes for “Day and Night” due to the success of his previous singles (“LOVE” and “Sober”, with the latter streamed over 300,000 times on Spotify), Jace says he tries hard to keep himself grounded.

“I just to try to ground myself, focus on the quality of my music and hope that listeners will support ‘Day and Night’ like they did my previous singles. I still have a long way to go. But I can honestly say that I'm proud of what I’ve achieved as an independent artist. Eventually, I want to break into the mainstream and find a record label that understands me and my music. I also want to contribute to the industry and bring OPM to the international scene. I'm grateful for the support my family, fans, friends, and the press have given me. I hope they continue to support my journey.”

TRANSFORMERS ONE is what most fans wanted to see, making it the best film in the franchise !

By : Edgar Allan E. Yu  TRANSFORMERS ONE is nothing short of a cinematic masterpiece that revitalizes the beloved franchise by diving deep...
