SONIC THE HEDGEHOG - Breaking Box-office Records !

By Edgar Allan E. Yu

Based on the widely popular SEGA video game, Sonic goes to Earth from his homeplanet, gets to meet a local sheriff and become his friend. Together they try to stop Dr. Robotnik who wants to use Sonic's powers for his evil deeds.

When the first trailer came out last year, fans were enraged about the character design of Sonic, and they threw all sorts of negative shots to the movie. The director acknowledged it and said that changes will happen. The release date was pushed back to February 2020. And after the crew's reworking on it, boy did they get it right !  Now the blue speedster looked much like his video game character, he's also cute and lovable !

The live action/CGI hybrid flick has lots of humor, plenty of high-speed action, and heart. Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik is perfect ! He is crazy, wacky, and maniacal, much like the way Jim Carrey was in the 1990s. James Marsden as the local sheriff Tom Wachowski is charming and affable. Ben Schwartz who lends his voice to Sonic brings a new facet to the blue blur. He is not just an alien who runs around everywhere, he can also be a friend and a superhero.

This live/CGI adaptation is aimed at kids and fans of the video games. But even adults and those who haven't played the games will enjoy it. I'm really happy that these videogame movies are getting better treatment and better success at the box office. Much like Detective Pikachu, and The Angry Birds movies. Note to fans - stay for the mid-credit scene. Directed by Jeff  Fowler (his directorial debut). Rated PG. From Paramount Pictures. Released through United International Pictures.
