Director Kirill Sokolov had a blast working on his new movie “They Will Kill You.” The horror-action-comedy, which he wrote and directed, is produced by Andy Muschietti, acclaimed director of horror hits including “It,” “It Chapter Two” and “Mama,” and features an ensemble cast that includes Zazie Beetz (“Invincible”), Tom Felton, Heather Graham and Patricia Arquette. 

“There was a real situation that inspired me for this script,” says Sokolov in a new featurette for the movie. Ten years ago, he and wife rented an apartment in a building where everyone seemingly knew each other. The situation kicked his imagination into overdrive. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they came and take us and sacrifice us and maybe that’s how will they prolong their lives. After that, we just fast-forward to this movie.”

She approached the film as an artist fully immersed in every detail. Watching her shape the story with that level of intention was incredible.” 

In charge of transforming Hoover’s written work into a screenplay is writer Lauren Levine, with Hoover collaborating every step of the way. Levine felt that Caswill’s vision was perfect for the novel, saying,” “Vanessa brings both poetry and precision to her work. Her use of color and light, and the way she collaborates with actors, gives every frame a sense of intimacy. She is European, telling a deeply American story, and that perspective adds dimension without creating distance. The material demands restraint, and Vanessa approached it with such honesty that the film never loses its balance.”

Reminders of Him is a story that starts with a tragic mistake, when Kenna (Maika Monroe) gets into a accident with her boyfriend that sends her to prison. She returns to her hometown in Wyoming seven years later, hoping to rebuild her life. Kenna also hopes to finally see her daughter, Diem, for the first time, who is in the custody of her paternal grandparents, Grace (Lauren Graham) and Patrick (Bradley Whitford). As tensions rise between the two parties, Kenna finds compassion, and a building romance in former NFL player and bartender Ledger (Tyriq Withers). As she forges her path towards redemption, heartbreak, and the hope for a second chance follows her.

Producer Gina Matthews joined the team soon after the project found its home in Universal, and was excited about how much everyone involved just clicked around the themes of the story. “I had a great meeting with Vanessa, Colleen and Lauren, and everything aligned very quickly,” Matthews says. “What stood out was the cohesion of the group. It was a female-led team at every level, working from a shared understanding of the material.”  

Director Caswill found Hoover’s work to be exhilarating to adapt, having directed other adaptations such as Little Women and Love at First Sight. . “One of the things I find most special about Colleen’s writing is that, even when she is dealing with very painful material, there is always a dry wit running through it,” Caswill says. “With a story this emotional, that balance matters. It cannot become relentlessly heavy, but it also cannot soften the weight of what these characters are going through. We were always aiming for that space in between. My instinct was to stay faithful to the book and trust that the visual language would come naturally from the material. If I could capture the heart of the story honestly, I was confident the film would find its own voice.”

A journey light years away from our own galaxy awaits in Project Hail Mary, the film adaptation of Andy Weir’s (The Martian) hit sci-fi novel of the same name. Long time collaborators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are at the captain’s seat as producers and directors of the film. The duo received the manuscript for Weir, and consumed it in record time. “We read it in 24 hours,” Miller says. “I stayed up all night. I think I went to bed at 5am because I had to find out what happened.”

Lord saw something special in the novel, and just knew that they had to helm the project. “It presents as a space adventure, a disaster movie, and then a third of the way through, it becomes an intimate character study between two individuals who have to learn how to communicate,” Lord says. “That shift is what makes it special.”

In Project Hail Mary, science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up in a spacecraft light years away from the solar system. Suffering from a bout of amnesia, his memory slowly returns, and his mission becomes clear: save humanity from a mysterious lifeform that seems to be draining the sun of its energy. He encounters an unlikely ally in the middle of his research, and together they might just have a shot against extinction. 

Weir had actually handed Gosling his manuscript for Project Hail Mary in early 2020, before the release of the novel. He’d already had a vision of Gosling portraying his main protagonist, but he also wanted the actor to consider producing the film as well. “It’s such an epic journey,” Gosling says. “And Ryland Grace is not stoic in any way. He's not brave in any traditional sense and he doesn't have any illusions about being a hero. But he keeps trying.”

With that, Gosling was on board, and soon after a team started being formed. Alongside the Lord-Miller duo, producer Amy Pascal (Little Women, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) was tapped to be part of the developing team. Pascal had also read the novel, and was drawn to the human element of Weir’s work. “It’s about science, yes,” Pascal says. “But it’s also about faith – faith in people, faith in collaboration. We're living in a time where everyone is scared of each other. No one trusts each other. Nobody wants to listen to each other. Everybody's in their silos just believing what they believe and reading different newspapers and not opening themselves up to other people. This movie is about having to listen. You have to learn someone else's language. You have to understand where they're coming from, or you can't save the world.”

Lord had the same feelings going into making the film, and hopes that they can create something truly inspirational. “We are living through a time where things can seem impossible, and this movie is about what is possible when people come together with imagination and goodwill,” Lord says.

“Project Hail Mary” shines as first reactions call it “the first great blockbuster of 2026”

An early screening of sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary has garnered praise from press and critics, calling the film “imagination unleashed.” Project Hail Mary is the film adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel of the same name. Christopher Miller and Phil Lord co-helm the project as producer and director.

The film stars Ryan Gosling as science teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes up onboard a spacecraft with no memory of his past or how he ended up in space. As he gets his bearings, he deduces that he is on a last-ditch effort to save humanity and the earth from destruction. Project Hail Mary also stars Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung, Liz Kingsman and James Ortiz.

Journalist Liam Crowley got emotional during the early screening of Project Hail Mary, posting, “#ProjectHailMary is perfect. Imagination unleashed even better than I pictured it on the page. How Gosling captivates throughout a largely one-man show is beyond me - your earliest Best Actor contender. & my sweet prince Rocky… tears flowed all third act. What a beautiful display of companionship. Heartwarming. Heartbreaking. And genuinely funny! An absolute must-see theatrical experience. “

Variety Editor Jazz Tangcay also praises Gosling’s performance in the film. “#ProjectHailMary is masterful and so beautifully done. A truly heartwarming story of humanity and friendship. Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers tackle the emotional journey of “Reminders of Him” by #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover

A powerful story can only translate to the big screen well with the perfect cast. Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers were personally chosen by author Colleen Hoover to play the main characters, Kenna Rowan and Ledger Ward, in Reminders of Him. The adaptation of her hit novel of the same name also stars Rudy Pankow, Lainey Wilson, Lauren Graham and Bradley Whitford.

Reminders of Him tells the story of Kenna Rowan, who returns to her hometown after a life-altering crash that sends her to prison for seven years. Kenna hopes to rebuild her life and het a chance to see her daughter, Diem, who she has never met before. Diem’s custodial grandparents bar Kenna’s attempts at contacting her daughter, but she finds unexpected compassion in local bar owner Ledger. A story of heartbreak, love, and second chances unfold.

The weight of Kenna’s journey falls squarely on the shoulders of Maika Monroe (Longlegs, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle). Hoover loves the restraint and precision Monroe brings to the role “Maika captured that perfectly in her audition,” co-writer and producer Colleen Hoover says. “She has this incredible ability to hold back until the emotion needs to surface. When it does, it’s beautiful. Even in moments of silence, she is doing so much. I cannot imagine anyone else playing Kenna.” 

Monroe did her research and dove deep into the novel to immerse herself in the role. . “It was incredibly helpful to have the book as a reference,” Monroe says. “There is a level of detail there that you cannot always get from a script. I turned to it often, especially before scenes where Kenna says very little.”

There’s also a distinct personality change that was bookmarked before and after Kenna’s accident, and Monroe had to take that into account in her performance. “Before the accident, she is fun and full of life, and her relationship with Scotty feels easy. Afterward, she is completely changed. That kind of trauma never leaves you. Even in your happiest moments, there is still pain underneath that never fully goes away.” 

Ledger Ward is a former NFL player who comes back to Laramie to help care for Diem, the child of his deceased best friend Scotty. His previous work with HIM places him as a top contender for the role. “Ledger needed to feel believable as a former football player, but also emotionally grounded. Tyriq has that presence. He brings strength, warmth and a surprising sensitivity. He kept rising to the top of every conversation,” says producer Gina Matthews.

Withers felt connected to his character from the start. “What drew me to Ledger was how closely his story mirrors parts of my own life,” Withers says. “He is carrying grief while trying to be strong for everyone around him. There is a weight he does not talk about. Playing him allowed me to explore my own experiences and learn more about how I cope, how I love, and how I move through pain.” 

He was glad to have the guiding hand of Hoover throughout production, and felt that it added to the believability of his character. The creative environment on set reinforced that approach. “Having Colleen there was incredible,” Withers says. “She is open and generous, and that gave me confidence. When the person who created the character tells you, ‘You are Ledger,’ it allows you to trust your instincts completely.”
