WWF-Philippines supports the implementation of the Extended Producers Responsibility Law

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Conservation group World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF-Philippines) is releasing a white paper to help the Philippine government in the upcoming implementation of the Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) Law.

After years of dialogues, the Extended Producers Responsibility Act of 2022 finally lapsed into law last July 23, 2022. Right after its passage, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) started multi-sectoral consultations to craft the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the EPR Law. 

WWF-Philippines lauds this monumental achievement in the battle against plastic pollution as the EPR scheme is a critical policy tool that holds producers accountable for the full life cycle of their products and packaging. EPR is an environmental policy approach that emerged in the 1990s and is now increasingly recognized globally as a useful tool for accelerating the transition to sustainable waste management and a circular economy. This scheme encourages waste reduction through the elimination of unnecessary packaging of products, the development of more environmentally friendly packaging design, and the recovery of plastic packaging from the trash in order to reuse or recycle them back into the production process.

To successfully implement the EPR Law in the country, WWF-Philippines, through discussions with other stakeholders from different sectors, highlights several key points that the IRR must include and give clarity. 

First, the IRR must clarify the role and powers of the Producer Responsibility Operator (PRO) as they will play a huge role in the implementation of the EPR system. Public registries and information data banks should also be readily available for monitoring and guidance. 

 

Secondly, eco-modulation or the adjustment of the EPR fees based on the packaging of the product should be emphasized and ensure that the fees will support the improvement of our solid waste management system. Investments should also be made in research and development, technology sharing, and the reduction of plastic waste in the country.

Another important point that WWF-Philippines underscores is labeling, which is an important aspect to facilitate proper re-use, recycling, return-to-manufacturer, and other means to circulate the material in the system. Lastly, EPR programs should be inclusive and integrated into the existing solid waste management system of our country.

EPR Law is a very important instrument that will shape the future of our initiatives against plastic pollution. Our work now is to implement together with all stakeholders and ensure that we are adopting a human-rights-based approach in doing so.”, said Czarina Constantino - Panopio, Program Manager for No Plastics in Nature initiative. 

According to studies by WWF-Philippines, Filipinos each consume a yearly average of 20kgs of plastics, and 15.43kgs of it becomes total plastic waste. The country is also suffering from a very low plastic recycling rate of 9%. The report further estimates that the Philippines leaks about 35% of plastic waste into the environment. 

WWF-Philippines actively pushes for actions against plastic pollution through its “No Plastic in Nature Initiative”. It is WWF’s global initiative to stop the flow of plastics entering nature by 2030 through the elimination of unnecessary plastics, doubling reuse, recycling, and recovery, and ensuring remaining plastic is sourced responsibly. Through this initiative, WWF-Philippines has been working with cities on plastic leakage, policymakers to advocate for a global treaty on plastic pollution and EPR, businesses to transition to circular business models, and the general public to campaign and act.

5 Reasons Why You Can’t Miss the Return of Alchemy Of Souls

 

Fantasy drama ALCHEMY OF SOULS captivated viewers with its magical story of mages finding their destinies and discovering love in the process. The series proved to be a hit all over the world and managed to stay on the Netflix Global Top 10 TV (Non-English) chart for an impressive 15 weeks. And now, the enchanting tale is set to resume on December 10 and we couldn’t be more thrilled. With many stories left unfinished, here are some reasons why you can’t miss the return of the series.

Jang Uk’s Evolution

Despite being born into a prominent mage family, Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) was initially unable to learn magical skills due to his birth secret. However, everything changes when he meets his new master. Jang Uk then fights against the destiny he was born into and gains new powers. Returning 3 years after coming back to life, Jang Uk is a completely changed person. The Return of Naksu

 

Naksu (Go Youn-jung) was a powerful sorceress and assassin before ending up in the body of a blind woman named Mu-deok. From having murderous intentions to experiencing love, Naksu changes drastically. However, she becomes unable to control her situation and everything shifts. Now a mysterious woman with Naksu’s appearance has emerged. There’s much to be unraveled with this new development.

The Friendships

 

Alchemy of Souls is such a satisfying blend of everything from magic, action, comedy, and friendship. All of the different friendships truly shine! The bromance relationships between Jang Uk, Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun), Park Dang-gu (Yoo In-soo), and crown prince Go Won (Shin Seung-ho) is so endearing. And we can’t forget Mu-deok’s friendships with the boys as well. Will their friendships stay the same or change ?

The Romance

Of course, you can’t leave out the romance. In addition to Jang Uk and Naksu’s compelling love, we have many relationships to root for. Have Park Dang-gu and Jin Cho-yeon (Arin)’s lovely plans changed? How about Park Jin (Yu Jun-sang) and Maid Kim (Oh Na-ra)? Will some of the single men find new love interests? We’re intensely invested in seeing some happy couples.

The Fate of Everything

Alchemy of Souls has delighted us with an intricately woven plot with a deeply rich storyline and engaging characters. With the epic story set to wrap up, the fate of the fantastical world of Daeho and all its characters remains the biggest question. What will happen to this majestic realm we’ve thoroughly fallen in love with? Only time will tell when the story continues on December 10!

Enter an epic family odd-venture in Disney’s “Strange World,” now in cinemas

From the studio that brought you “Encanto” and “Big Hero 6” comes “Strange World,” an original action-packed comedy adventure from Walt Disney Animation Studios that journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest—and by far— most crucial mission.

 

At its core, Disney’s “Strange World” is a story about family, specifically three generations who each are seeking their place in the world. Searcher Clade (voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal) is a brilliant family man—who, as a teenager, discovered a plant-based power source that changed the world of Avalonia. Even with a statue in town in his honor, Searcher is at his core a humble farmer, growing, harvesting, and distributing the crop alongside his wife and son. Searcher’s dad, Jaeger (voiced by Dennis Quaid), set out at a young age to be the kind of explorer legends are made of. A statue in town (right next to Searcher’s) memorialized the great explorer, who has not been seen in 25 years, presumed lost during an expedition. Searcher’s son, Ethan (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White), is a happy 16-year-old with a great sense of humor and a decent work ethic (for a teenager). Ethan helps on the farm, but he's not sure he wants to follow in his father’s footsteps. The three Clades have huge differences that can prove divisive—and at the same time, they have more in common than any of them is willing to admit.  

 

Can the motley crew of adventurers – that includes a mischievous blob and a three-legged dog – set aside their differences as they face the slew of dangerous and fantastical creatures in what could be their biggest mission yet?

 

The film is directed by Oscar winner Don Hall (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Raya the Last Dragon”), co-directed and written by Qui Nguyen (“Raya and the Last Dragon”), and produced by Roy Conli (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6”, “Tangled”).
