This is the live-action remake of the 1994 classic animated film. It brings back the wild animals, the hit songs, and more. It tells the story of young Simba (JD McCrary) from when he was a cub to the time he becomes the king of the jungle. Along the way we meet Mufasa (voiced again by James Earl Jones), Sarabi (Alfre Woodard), young Nala (Shahadi Wright Joseph), Zazu (John Oliver), Rafiki (John Kani), Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor), etc. The adult Simba and Nala were voiced by Donald Glover and Beyoncé Knowles. And both have the singing credibility to boot.
I really enjoyed the updated banter between Timon (Billy Eichner) and Pumbaa (Seth Rogen), the meerkat and warthog, who appear in the second act. They are hilarious ! One of them even sang a famous song from another Disney movie and the audience went crazy ! They stole the show !
According to Director Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan from the Iron Man, Avengers and Spider-Man movies), this film is all CGI. Yet the film is so realistic and visually stunning you will feel like you're in the midst of the pridelands, especially if you watch it on IMAX. The trees, the mountains, the bugs and animals, looked oh so real. It's definitely a technical achievement for those who worked on the special effects.
Fans of the original will enjoy this for the nostalgia, while those who haven't seen the animated version will love its timeless story. It's a magical re-imagining of one of Disney's most successful animated films. Written by Jeff Nathanson. Rated PG. From Walt Disney Pictures.
