It's not easy to write a musical biography, particularly when the subject's life and career span several years or decades. The story's progression, the music, the characters, the costumes, etc., may not all be adequately covered in a typical length of a film. Maybe a TV series could have done a better job. Maybe, just maybe. I Wanna Dance With Somebody, the most recent musical biopic, demonstrated this.
This two and a half hour film about the legendary Whitney Houston covered a lot of ground, but it seems like there were still more highs and lows to this music icon's life that were left out. It did however, provide the major information that the majority of fans were interested in - such as when she started singing in church, how was she discovered, what her life was like during the course of her career.
It will allow you to relive the life and times of one of the greatest voices in music, if not the best voice. It is a display of some of her chart-topping hits, played one after another. Naomi Ackie may not have had Whitney Houston's striking good looks, but she made up for it by embodying the eccentricity and soul of the beloved singer. I just wished that the producers have chosen a better filmmaker who could have shown us the grandeur and complexity of a superstar like Whitney Houston. She certainly deserves it !
