Part of Your World: How the Little Mermaid Inspires Us All

 By : Edgar Allan Yu

The original animated film was the start of the Disney renaissance of fairy tale classics back in the '80s and '90s And yet when I came to watch this new version, I didn't have much expectations because of the way some of the Disney films of late didn't live up to their standards. I didn't want to be disappointed. And boy was I surprised ! This new film not only reinvigorated the classic tale, but it also expanded some of the character arcs and narratives. The well-loved songs were given added lyrics and new interpretations, without moving away from their main essences.

Halle Bailey is a great actor, and an even better singer, proving to everyone that she deserves to be cast as Ariel. Jonah Hauer-King has the charm and swagger of a Prince Eric. He has more screen time and given his own back-story. He even has his own song. While Melissa McCarthy as Ursula is Perfection ! She looks and sounds like the evil human-octopus hybrid. The side characters—like Sebastian the crab (Daveed Diggs), Flounder the fish (Jacob Tremblay), and Scuttle the seagull (Awkwafina)—provide comic relief and help advance the story. I also enjoyed Javier Bardem  as King Triton, and I love the diversity of Ariel's mermaid sisters who looked like they came from different continents.

The stunning CGI and visuals in The Little Mermaid are truly a sight to behold. The animators created a magical underwater world that is richly detailed and bursting with sea life. Each frame is filled with colorful coral reefs, swaying seaweed, and schools of tropical fish swimming by. The underwater scenes are so expertly illustrated that you feel as if you're swimming through the ocean yourself.

The Little Mermaid features a cast of memorable characters and catchy songs that have resonated with audiences for generations. “Part of Your World” expresses Ariel’s longing to join the human world, while “Under the Sea” highlights the colorful and carefree life of the sea creatures. “Kiss the Girl” builds suspense during Ariel and Eric’s romantic boat ride.

After all these years, The Little Mermaid remains as enchanting and delightful as ever. The timeless story of a young mermaid who gives up her voice and tail for love continues to capture the hearts of both children and adults. With its memorable music, lovable characters, and themes of love, friendship and courage against adversity, this Disney classic is sure to entertain and inspire you.  This is easily the best live action interpretation of a Disney classic, truly an enjoyable trip to the cineplexes.
