It's the year 2045. People are living in stacked-up crates like cartons on top of each other. To escape their humdrum lives, almost everyone is immersed in a virtual reality world called Oasis. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), a typical 20-something guy is obsessed with the Oasis and its creator. When the inventor, James Halliday (Mark Rylance) died, he left an easter egg for everyone to search. Whoever finds the easter egg will get to control the Oasis, and will inherit the company worth half a trillion dollars.
This is based on a 2011 best-selling novel by Ernest Cline. Several pop culture references are in it which are mostly from the '80s movies, games, and music. Everytime a familiar scene, music, or character appears, I get a jolt as the fanboy in me remembers those times.
The movie is a visual delight ! Oasis is like heaven for gamers where anything is possible. Your only limit is your imagination. But alas, not everything in it is good. There's the dark side too. There are creatures who would try to destroy or eliminate you. And everyone's on a race against everybody. It's about finding an easter egg, where there's plenty of easter eggs.
It's amazing how the director placed all those characters in one coherent narrative. I never had so much fun with nostalgia. Clearly, Steven Spielberg can still make fun and great movies. He is back to doing what he does best ! From Warner Bros. Pictures. Rated PG-13.
