SMURFS : Why all the hate from critics ?

By: Edgar Allan E. Yu

I saw an advance screening of SMURFS last week, and I thought it was good. However, when I checked the reviews online, I was shocked to find so many negative critiques. People were calling it the worst movie for kids, some even labeling it total trash. This made me wonder if they had watched the same movie I did.

SMURFS features a simple yet engaging storyline where Papa Smurf is taken captive by the evil wizard brothers Gargamel and Razamel. In a heroic twist, Smurfette leads her fellow smurfs on a mission into the real world to rescue him. Along their journey, we meet a nameless smurf who is still searching for his true identity. This quest adds depth to their adventure.

The film truly has a little bit of everything—action, comedy, drama, dance, magic, and music ! The animation is gorgeous; you can't help but admire the vibrant colors and whimsical designs that bring these beloved characters to life. The songs are catchy too, with delightful dance moves performed by our favorite smurfs that are sure to entertain kids and adults alike.

The voice cast is impressive as well—featuring well-known celebrities like Rihanna, James Corden, John Goodman, Kurt Russell, Xolo Maridueña etc.—and they all bring something special to their roles. My nieces and I had an absolute blast watching it together !

While it's true that SMURFS may not be the greatest movie for kids out there, calling it the worst feels unjustified. It’s disheartening to see such harsh criticism when there are so many other summer blockbusters vying for attention this season—films like Superman or Jurassic World Rebirth overshadowing its release might have contributed to this backlash.

At its core, SMURFS delivers wholesome entertainment with heartwarming moments that resonate with family audiences. So before dismissing it based on critics' reviews alone, I urge you to give it a chance; you might just find yourself enjoying this colorful adventure as much as we did !
